Our thoughts are with the families of the 11 rig workers who perished along with another 17 people who were injured, three of them critically. The Minerals Management Service stated that there are 90 drilling rigs working within U.S. waters in the Gulf of Mexico with oil production currently at 1.7 million barrels per day along with 6.6 billion cubic feet of gas production each day.

The drill rig Deepwater Horizon was under contract and drilling the Macondo Prospect for the BP oil company approximately 52 miles southeast of Venice, Louisiana. The company BP also have partners MOEX Offshore with a 10% stake and Anadarko with a 25% interest in the operation.

Prior to the rig explosion the rig had had evidently completed the setting and cementing of the well bore 7″ steel casing.
