Guidelines For Bending Roof Shingles In A Safe Manner

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

The asphalt roof shingles occupy all the spaces of a standard roof. The voids and the valleys of the roof are also covered by such shingles. However, there are certain segments of the roof that ask for the bending of the roof shingles. The uneven structure of such roof areas call for the modification of the roof shingles. For example, the roof areas such as ridges, hips, eaves, rakes etc. are inappropriate for flat shingles.

Besides that, you need to know the physical features of the concerned roof segment. Proper knowledge of the concerned area would help you with an efficient installation job. Furthermore, formulate a correct technique for bending the asphalt shingles one by one. Make sure that the shingles that you are bending are flexible enough to undergo the modification. An inflexible shingle would find it hard to bend and would crack easily on account of force exertion. Warm weather supports the flexibility of the shingles and hence, you should carry out the installation in summer season preferably.

However, it would not be wise on your part to wait for the summer season to come. Long pending the project may take a toll on the structural integrity of your roof architecture. Hence, try to render required warmth to the shingles during the winter season only. Store the bundles of the shingles in the area of the home that is warm and properly insulated.

On the other hand, storage of shingles should be done outside the home during summers. Allow the shingles as much warmth as possible and install the shingles on the roof.

Before installing the shingles on the roof, lay them flat on the roof. This would allow the shingles to face the extreme heat of the sun. Consequently, you would notice more flexible shingles when you would initialize the actual task.

Observe the concerned segment of the roof and evaluate the intensity of bend required. Follow certain guidelines while bending the shingles one by one. Firstly, try to cover the maximum edge area of the shingle with your hand and not with your fingertips. Holding the edge of the shingle with the fingertips would create a high tension at the center of the concerned shingle. Such a scenario could result in a possible breaking of the shingle unit.

A careful and slow operation ensures the success in the project. Some homeowners try to finish the task at a brisk rate. Such a technique should be avoided as it would spoil the development made in the project.

Secure the shingle to the segment with the help of nails and hammer.

How To Shop For An Anti Scald Shower Valves ?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

If very hot or very cold water start coming out of the showerhead, it could result into some mishaps and is very dangerous for children and physically challenged people. A constant temperature that does not harm the skin of an individual is very essential to be maintained. The constant temperature can be maintained with the help of an anti-scald valve or thermostatic temperature control valve in the shower.

Anti scald pressure balanced and temperature control valves make a shower very efficient and useful. Sometimes very cold water start flowing through the shower head and sometimes very hot water start coming out of it. All these problems are removed with the help of such valves. Hence, while purchasing a shower head, don’t forget to take one that has anti-scald valve.

With the help of these valves, a safe temperature level can be maintained irrespective of temperature level of water. One other good alternative to solve this problem is to set the thermostat at 120 degrees. Once you set your thermostat at this particular temperature you can check water temperature by putting a thermometer inside a cup of water.

The main cause of change in water temperature is change in water pressure. Let us suppose a situation in which a person is bathing and at the same time other person is using toilet. When the person in toilet turns on the flush, cold water pressure near the shower reduces resulting in more hot water supply through the shower head.

On contrary, if a person in house opens up any hot water faucet, it reduces the water temperature of water coming out of the shower.

To eliminate the problem of water pressure, you can buy a shower head having pressure balancing valve. With the help of this valve the pressure of water could be maintained that also help in maintaining a constant water temperature. In addition to solving so many problems, this pressure balancing valve creates the problem of water flow.

If you want a good flow and good volume from your shower then one good alternative is to use the thermostatic valves. Usually you get 3/4 inch water inlet which delivers water at a very high pressure. It also maintains a comfortable temperature of water for bathing.

Hence, if you do not have pressure balanced valve in your shower head then try replacing it today only. A single handled valve replacement is always easier than dual handled setup.

Safety Considerations While Operating A Drill

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Right kinds of tools are very essential to complete a task perfectly. If a particular tool is not appropriate for a job then it will consume more time and you will not be able to complete that task efficiently. Screwdrivers, hammers and spanners are the common tools of a plumber but the use of drills makes their life more convenient. Let us discuss about drills in little detail.

Drills are needed when holes are to be made in metal, wood and concrete. Hand operated drills are considered to be very cumbersome and the results of using them do not prove to be very satisfactory. On the other hand, power drills are preferred universally.

In power drills you will find corded power drills and cordless power drills. Corded power drills need to have a cord that is used to provide electricity to the drill whereas cordless power drills don’t need any cord but they operate through batteries and charges.

Cordless power drills are preferred over corded power drills as they are easier to handle. Cordless power drills are lighter in weight as compared to corded ones. Cordless power drills are very handy as they can be used even in places where there is no electrical socket. In cordless power drills, no cord gets in the way of a busy workman.

All of these advantages, however, do not mean that corded drills have no good features. Corded drills are preferred for many kinds of tasks such as heavy duty jobs by experienced workers. Corded power drills are used for tough jobs because they offer more power and torque. But the user of a corded power drill has to rely heavily on the availability of a suitable electrical socket for working.

Users find that holes of a large diameter are better drilled with corded power drills instead of cordless power drills. If a cordless drill is used for a task of this kind, it would stress the battery of the drill too much and lead to a breakdown.

While using drills especially power drills, one should exercise extreme caution to avoid any mishaps. Safety glasses should always be worn while using a power drill. This will protect the eyes from any bits of flying concrete or wood that is being pierced. Appropriate clothing is also necessary. Loose fitting clothing or jewelry can get caught in a power drill so these should be avoided.

For safety purpose, the cord of corded drill requires periodical checks against any wear and tear. You also need to firmly handle the drill while using it.

Application Of Roofing Felt Paper

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Most homeowners avoid the roofing jobs. Such a laid-back attitude is accredited to the uncertainty involved in the roofing jobs. The uninformed homeowners fail to take necessary actions in case of a roofing emergency. Hence, the homeowners must give a shot at the easier and simpler roofing jobs. Besides acquiring the basic information, the homeowners would be able to cut down the cost of the roofing project on hand as the labor charges would be reduced.

One such job that falls under the category of easy roofing tasks is the roof felting job. Make sure that you possess the right set of tools and equipments before moving ahead with the proceedings. Also, follow the required safety precautions while climbing and working on the roof. Often, the roofing jobs lead to unforeseen accidents and hazards. Hence, one should be proactive regarding the safety of his life.

Before the application of the roof felt, there are certain buildups that need to be constructed. For instance, the drip edges should be prepared for the roof felting task. The drip edge should be properly treated with starter roll and ice guard. In order to accomplish the task with ease, follow a procedure stepwise.

Drip edge is an aluminum sheath that runs from the bottom of the roof edges to the top of it. It conceals the edges of the roof from the external agents such as air, water, sunlight etc. The sound state of the drip edge decides the efficiency of the roofing felt.

Take out a started roll from the roofing supplies purchased and apply it on the drip edge. Cover the entire spread of the drip edge while laying the started roll. The started roll layer prepares the roof surface for the installation of the roof felt. It renders the required adhesiveness to the surface.

Follow it up by stapling ice guard sheath on the roof. Ice guards are generally recommended to the households located in hilly regions.

Once both these layers are laid on the roof, take out the roll of felt paper from the supply kit. Select one end of the drip edge and unroll the leading end of the felt paper roll. Continue unrolling the paper as you move towards the other end of the edge.

Make sure that the paper is applied along the virtual lanes on the roof.
